A huge granite stone by the first tee tells you that Ashton-on-Mersey Golf Club was founded in 1897 in the days when the horse that pulled the mower was indispensible. Since then the club has grown surviving two World Wars and a fire that burned down the old wooden clubhouse in August 1990.
